Sports Festival: Katisna grabs gold, silver, bronze medals in Delta

… Best performance in decade, says Sports Director

By Faith Awa Maji, Katsina

The Katsina State contingent won a total of three Gold, four Silver and nine Bronze medals at the just concluded 21st National Sports Festival (NSF) in Delta State.

This is contained in a statement issued to newsmen on Sunday in Katsina by the spokesperson of the State’s Sports Council, Mr. Nasir Gide.
The statement noted that the medals haulage was the best performance recorded by the state in several years.
He added that the State recorded the success in traditional boxing (Dambe), Golf, Judo, Taekwondo, boxing and wrestling among other games.

Commenting on the success recorded by team Katsina, the State’s Director of Sports, Alhaji Umar Aliyu-Saulawa expressed gratitude to the athletes.

Aliyu-Saulawa who described the success as historic, noted that the State has not won a Gold medal at the NSF since 2011.

The Sports’ Director attributed the success to the support and cooperation given by Governor Aminu Masari and the State’s Commissioner for Sports, Dr. Bishir Gambo-Saulawa.

According to Gide, the Director revealed that there was the need for the state government to place some of the athletes on monthly allowances for the state to continue to excel in all aspects of sporting activities.
