The Federal Government has reaffirmed its determination in modernizing the art of Institutional meteorological operations in Nigeria.
The minister of aviation Senator Hadi Sirika stated this during the inaugural matriculation of the meteorological institute of science and technology, Katsina.
He said NiMet is Charged with the responsibility of advising the federal government on all aspects of meteorology, project and interpreting Climate.
“The NiMet establishment Act also Provide the Agency with the responsibility to observe, collate, collect, process and disseminate data and information within and outside”
Senator Hadi Sirika noted that the ongoing efforts of the federal ministry of Aviation towards the establishment of a Pan-African Aviation University were aimed at closing the existing gap within the Aviation and Aerospace as a critical sector of the National and Global Development.
The minister encouraged the Matriculating students to be focused and work assiduously to live up to expectations and urged them to be part of the future pool competent of experts in meteorological and climate science.
In a remark, the Director-General NIMET professor Mansur Bako Matazu said the agency’s vision was to be a world-class provider of weather and Climate Change services for safety and sustainable national socio-economic development with a mission to observe Nigerian weather and climate.
“NIMET has developed the capacity for meteorological observation analysis and reporting through ground-based instruments, upper air instrument, satellite-based observations, modeling, forecasting, and non-casting activities”
Professor Mansur noted that with the advent of new technologies, training and retraining of the personnel remains paramount.
“over the years, we have utilized our training school in oshodi Lagos, and we’ve realized that the oshodi center alone can not cater for the size of Nigerian participants let other countries, it is necessary therefore to have another center of excellence that will compliment what was on the ground, hence the emergence of the meteorological institute of science and technology Katsina.
