One of the landmark achievements of president Muhammadu Buhari is the establishment of the commission for people with disabilities (PWDs). Since its take-off ,we have seen tangible results such as reduction in discrimination against PWD. We are moving towards a more inclusive society. There has been increase access to opportunities include employment.Public buildings including roads, walkways,etc are now designed in a way friendly to Government Policies and programme are now formulated taken PWDs into cognizance.
Many states such as Plateau,Lagos,Kano,Borno,etc have followed suit, enacted have laws to protect the people with disabilities.In these states the Boards or commissions have begun operations.
But in Katsina state,we are left behind; the Disability bill is abandoned on the floor of the Katsina state House of Assembly.This shows disgusting contempt to PWDs by the House. These so-called lawmakers don’t treat their welfare in this disgraceful manner. It is unfair and unjust to treat the PWDs in this way.
The questions are: When the House will pass the bill? How long will it take Governor Masari to assent it? And how long it will take him to constitute the commission/ board? Only time will tell.
