Today is the International Day for the eradication of poverty. In 2015, the world through UN, gave birth to Sustainable Development Goals ( SDGs) an offshoots of MDGs.The first goal is eradication of poverty by 2030.
8 years to 2030, over one billion people still live below the poverty line. In Nigeria ,the number of lumpen proletariant will reach 95 million before the expiration of this year.
The meaning of poverty according to late Dr. Yusufu Bala Usman of blessed memory: “is the acute and permanent shortage of sufficient and good food, water, shelter and clothing”.
Facing the stark reality, Nigeria cannot achieve the NO POVERTY AGENDA by 2030 .
The reason why majority hardworking Nigerians cannot
earn a decent living is obscured. The official excuse proffer by Abuja, today include: Ukrainian war or rather Russian invasion of Ukraine,Covid-19 ,oil bunkering ,etc. This is what Dr. Bala called “dishonest false theory”. It is a theory “inspired by western social scientists ” as Bala Usman said.
But what is the actual cause of poverty in Nigeria?
Still I will quote late Dr Yusufu Bala Usman:”The reason for the poverty is exploitation”.
Then of course,no one can refute about type of capitalism. As Bala Usman said,” public institutions are only public in name, because they are run, in fact, for the purpose of accumulating private wealth.”
Our system is serving the few priveleged elitesThe high the position in government, the more prospects of wealth accumulation. The system has failed that they cannot even provide security to peasant farmers in the village.
